5 FUN ways to earn the new civic engagement badges

Want to try the NEW civics engagement badges with your troop but not sure where to start? Check out these 5 fun ideas for spicing up the topic of government. Your girls will be political science prodigies after these activities!

While all elections are important, local elections get much less love than their flashier State and federal counterparts. That means that having a good campaign sign is essential when running for local office. Have your girls pretend they are running for mayor of their city. They should create a campaign sign that stands out and represents their ideas. When they are done, have them share with the group and get feedback.

Why drive all the way to Austin when you can tour the state capitol from the comfort of your home! Use a combination of YouTube videos, google maps, and pictures to show your girls the state capitol building. Then, have them redesign the building using their choice of medium (Legos or clay would be super fun!).

Who doesn't love Schoolhouse Rock? The classic "I'm Just a Bill" is a great way to teach girls of any age about the legislative process. After watching, divide the girls into the different parts the process and have them write and try to pass a law of their own. To make it extra relevant, have the law they create be a troop law that they will all need to follow after it is passed!

Have your girls pretend they are the newly elected President and they need to pick their cabinet. Go over a few of the positions and then have them pick a person (real or fictional) that they would appoint. They can share their picks with the group and explain why they made their decisions.

In the history of our country, only FOUR women have served on the Supreme Court. Teach your troop about the amazing female Justices and start a discussion about women representation in all branches of government. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, "Women belong in all places decisions are being made."
